Are My Fringes Showing?
For this week’s Gospel you might want to look up phylacteries and fringes. You will find that they are devotional aids. People who were trying to mold their lives closer to their understanding of God’s call to them would use these aids to remember, to focus,
But for some it was out of control. The aids became advertisements – self advertisements.
I was thinking about how different it is today. How I am not like that. How I don’t crave the attention. Then I was leaving Thai Smile after lunch and walked to my car. Twenty feet away, a person I did not know spotted my Clergy Shirt and Collar. He began deferring to me and even bowing his head a little. It was embarrassing. Knock it off.
But some place inside it also felt good, like I deserved it. Maybe I am less different than I like to think.
Jesus offers his disciples, us, a remedy. He offers us a way to constantly remember it is about God, not me. Jesus invites us to service. “The greatest among you will be your servant.”
God’s love for all of us is abundant and there is nothing wrong with being absolutely confident in it. Jesus is teaching his disciples that receiving it is just the beginning. As we become more loved we get to a point where loving and caring for others seems like the natural response.
Our joy is filled when we see the effects of that love in other lives. Our joy becomes full when we see someone grin when we serve them. Like they don’t expect it, but someplace inside it feels good. Like they are one of God’s children. Like they deserved it.
Join us in worship and help us prepare to serve.
Fr. Andrew

Matthew 23:1-12
Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father– the one in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Kenya Ministry Couple Homeward Bound
|
|

For the past ten years, since retiring, Drs. Nancy and Gerry Hardison, parishioners of All Souls’ Episcopal Church in Point Loma, have lived among the people of Kenya and saw the needs of the community. Together they have worked on medical and business projects in Nairobi and Maseno, Kenya. They have decided their time of ministry is drawing to a close. The Hardisons have touched countless lives with their work, their passion and their example.

Nancy is a retired business professor from Point Loma Nazarene University and Gerry is a retired gastro-enterologist from the University of California, San Diego. They will continue to raise money and make connections to support ongoing work in Kenya. Welcome home, Nancy & Gerry, to the USA. Pray for them in their travel and transition.

Adult Faith Building – “Sundays at 9:15”
SUNDAY, The Rev. Canon Victoria Hatch continues a series (October 30) on Understanding the Hebrew Scriptures. This course will be an overview of what we traditionally call the “Old Testament” and lay the foundation for future study. We’ll look at [1] the Torah (or Pentateuch); [2] the Former Prophets (or what we call the Historical Books); [3] the Latter Prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Book of the Twelve); and [4] the Poetic Books and Wisdom Literature. Be sure to bring a Bible and a friend!
Adult Faith Building – “Sundays at 9:15”

We Are The Church Together.” But what does that mean for us in our day and in this place? That’s a good question, especially during this month, as we focus on thankful living and thanksgiving. The Rev. Canon Victoria Hatch will lead us in several Scriptural studies which may help us to better understand our use of time, our skills and, yes, our money. Join us, at 9:15am, in The Library, on November 6, 13 and 20, as, together, we explore what it means to be the Church. Be sure to bring your Bible.

Scam Alert!
An impersonator pretends to be a relative in urgent need of money.
You receive a phone call from someone pretending to be your son, daughter, grandchild, etc. requesting money to get out of a predicament. Your emotions run high and you cave in to sending a money gram for $5,000 to assist. You have been scammed. It is happening frequently.
If you should receive such a call, verify the identity of the caller by asking a question only the true individual could answer. If the caller is unable to answer correctly, you can be assured you have interrupted a scam.
For a thorough discussion on this subject, Click Here.

Desert SOS

To make is easier for parishioners to sign-up for Flowers, Coffee Hours, and the Dessert Ministry, we have integrated the sign-up sheets into a three-ring binder format. These sheets are in binders that are on the entrance table in the Parish Hall. Instead of writing parallel onto a bulletin board, you will now be able to write at table height. Please note that there are binders for the rest of 2011 and for 2012. If you have a special date that you want to commemorate, be sure to save it as soon as possible.

Bullies Not Welcome Here
At St. Paul in the Desert we want to welcome all worshipers to a place that is free of violence and bullying.
Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable.
“It Gets Better” is a series of video messages to encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender youth and let them know that they are loved as they are.
“A Blessing for Those Who Are Bullied” was written by the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, a Bishop of the Episcopal Church.
It is not enough to say “NO” to bullies. It is important to stand up for people and to provide resources for those who have been the targets.

Report Sexual Misconduct
As part of our ongoing commitment to creating a safe haven for everyone, please be reminded that our diocese values the tenet of our baptismal covenant to “respect the dignity of every human being.” Part of the way we live into that is to train people in the prevention of sexual misconduct. Another part that goes hand-in-hand with training is reporting incidences of sexual misconduct. Our bishop, the Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes, takes reports seriously and investigates them thoroughly and confidentially. If you believe you have experienced sexual misconduct of any kind, please contact Bishop Mathes immediately: bishopmathes@edsd.org, 619-481-5450.
