Today!
In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus inaugurates his public ministry at the synagogue in hometown Nazareth. That is the story, but it is not quite right. The text tells us that Jesus preached in the synagogues, plural, and that everybody loved him. I prefer to think of the experience in Nazareth as the culmination of Jesus’ inaugural tour. What if Jesus had read the same passage from Isaiah at several places before he came “home” to his neighborhood? What if he gave the same initial sermon in several places?
What if every time we think of Jesus talking about God’s kingdom, we hear those words from Isaiah – Good News to the poor, release to captives, sight to the blind, freedom from oppression, and the blessing of God’s favor? I think we would have heard the agenda of his entire ministry! Jesus thought so, too: “Today, this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”
As we read through Luke on most of the Sundays of this year, have this passage at hand. Compare it to the parables and teaching we encounter.
But what about “today?”
I think that Jesus’ concrete response to Isaiah is important. It tells us that Jesus is not preaching about Good News in the “sweet bye and bye.” This Good News starts today!
Luke uses the word for “today” more than any other gospel. Brian Stoffregen writes that it is used at times of radical change. The angel greets the shepherds with the news: “To you is born this day … a savior.” From the cross, Jesus tells the thief: “Today, you will be with me in paradise.”
Today is also the day when each of us are called to join Jesus in his mission. Don’t be confused. Today is not when the mission is done, it is when the mission is “fulfilled,” when it is engaged. In the church and in our lives, we need to hold the proclamation of Isaiah in front of us as a guide.
How does my life connect with good news for the poor or release for people who are bound? How does the work of our Parish build the kingdom that Jesus inaugurated? I see some of that happening and there will be more.
The Magi followed a star that was before them, and we are called to follow the vision of the Abundant Life of Jesus that he preached in Nazareth.
Today!
Join us as we celebrate Jesus’ inaugural sermon at worship and encourage one another with Isaiah’s vision of the Good News.
Fr. Andrew

Luke 4:14-21
Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me
because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat
down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

Roy’s Desert Resource Center
|
|

Thanks For SOS Support
Parishioners at St. Paul in the Desert donated (through our SOS Fund) $2,000 for gift cards forChristmas and emergency needs of the homeless at Roy’s Desert Resource Center. In addition, on-going donations to our SOS Fund for “sox and underwear” supported a $516 contribution for January needs. That bought 116 pairs of sox, 82 T-shirts and 89 pairs of underwear! All of this is in addition to donated items taken to the altar during Sunday services and deserts provided for our Monday desert program.
– – –
Volunteers from St. Paul in the Desert serve dessert to 70-100 homeless men, women and children at Roy’s every Monday evening. We also deliver socks and underwear purchased and placed in the “ROY’S” basket. Roy’s clients, who are striving to get back into the main stream, deeply appreciate your efforts.
If you would like to participate in this program:
• Sign up to Volunteer.
• Write a check to St. Paul’s (marked: “Roy’s Fund”).
• Bring new white socks and/or large underwear for the
“ROY’S” basket.
• When you are baking, make an extra cake, muffins,
cupcakes or dessert loaf. Mark them for “ROY’S”
and put them in the right-hand section of the Parish Hall fridge.
Please call Hap Blaisdell at 760.323.5726 for additional information and ideas.

“A Welcoming, Empowering, Supportive”
Ministry!
Our mission statement calls us to be “a welcoming, empowering and supportive community.” We are currently forming a new ministry at St Pau’s to support that mission. Volunteers are needed from all three services to donate approximately 90 minutes of their time per month. That time is split into 3-30 minute segments: 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after the service you attend, once per month, to support the Welcoming Table located in the Narthex and another 30 minutes a month assisting with name badge organization. If you are able to lend a hand, please contact Mike Funke at 760.-409.0986 or mike.funke@yahoo.com!
Help us live our mission statement!

Bullies Not Welcome Here
At St. Paul in the Desert we want to welcome all worshipers to a place that is free of violence and bullying.
Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable.
“It Gets Better” is a series of video messages to encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender youth and let them know that they are loved as they are.
“A Blessing for Those Who Are Bullied” was written by the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, a Bishop of the Episcopal Church.
It is not enough to say “NO” to bullies. It is important to stand up for people and to provide resources for those who have been the targets.
