The Abundant Lite

March 21, 2013                                                                  For Sunday, March 24th

From the Rector

Sustain The Weary

This weekend we move into Holy Week. We read Luke’s version of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and we hear the story of his suffering and death. The story is so large that it is hard to take it all in. The special observances of the next week help us break it down and follow smaller vignettes.

People are invited to dine with Jesus’ followers on Thursday March 28th, at 6 and to experience foot-washing. Sign up at: info@stpaulsps.org Then we remember the establishment of the Lord’s Supper at 7. Some will take turns praying with Jesus through the night in 1 hour shifts.

On Good Friday, the 29th, at Noon, we hear the story of the Crucifixion according to John, we contemplate the cross, and receive Holy Communion quietly and depart quietly. At 7 that evening, some will walk with Jesus through nine stations on his journey to the cross.

The reading from Isaiah which we will read this weekend called my attention to this Holy time and led me to see the suffering of Jesus with new eyes. The servant character in Isaiah has been likened to Jesus. That servant is on a mission.

“The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may sustain the weary with a word.”

Jesus is on a mission to care for the lost and weary of the world. He does not lift the sword to attack, but offers his back to the oppressor’s blows and turns his cheek. When I read the lines from Isaiah, I see Jesus, confident in his mission, connected to God, and offering himself for all.

In this Holy time, I want to be used by God to sustain the weary with a word. I want to be focused on God’s mission and on that awareness of God’s presence. Even when things are tough, I want to encounter them from that place of confidence, from that place of service.

Join us this weekend as we re-hear the suffering of Jesus and are sustained by his words of abundant love.

Fr. Andrew

Featured Scripture

    Isaiah 50:4-9a

The Lord GOD has given me
  the tongue of a teacher,
that I may know how to sustain
  the weary with a word.
Morning by morning he wakens–
  wakens my ear
  to listen as those who are taught.
The Lord GOD has opened my ear,
  and I was not rebellious,
  I did not turn backward.
I gave my back to those who struck me,
  and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard;
I did not hide my face
  from insult and spitting.
The Lord GOD helps me;
  therefore I have not been disgraced;
therefore I have set my face like flint,
  and I know that I shall not be put to shame;
  he who vindicates me is near.
Who will contend with me?
  Let us stand up together.
Who are my adversaries?
  Let them confront me.
It is the Lord GOD who helps me;
  who will declare me guilty?

“A Welcoming, Empowering, Supportive”

Ministry!

Our mission statement calls us to be “a welcoming, empowering and supportive community.” We are currently forming a new ministry at St Pau’s to support that mission.  Volunteers are needed from all three services to donate approximately 90 minutes of their time per month.  That time is split into 3-30 minute segments: 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after the service you attend, once per month, to support the Welcoming Table located in the Narthex and another 30 minutes a month assisting with name badge organization.  If you are able to lend a hand, please contact Mike Funke at 760.-409.0986 or mike.funke@yahoo.com!

Help us live our mission statement!

Bullies Not Welcome Here

At St. Paul in the Desert we want to welcome all worshipers to a place that is free of violence and bullying.

Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable.

“It Gets Better” is a series of video messages to encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender youth and let them know that they are loved as they are.

“A Blessing for Those Who Are Bullied” was written by the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, a Bishop of the Episcopal Church.

It is not enough to say “NO” to bullies. It is important to stand up for people and to provide resources for those who have been the targets.
