The Abundant Lite

July 18, 2013                                                               For Sunday July 21st

From Canon Victoria

Domestic Diva

Mary and Martha as sisters go, are really very similar to sisters everywhere, in every generation. Or actually for siblings everywhere. It is a familiar lament, “Make her/him help me!” As a younger sister, I’ve always felt that Martha gets the short end of the stick. Martha rushes around getting a meal together for their guests, and Mary decides to sit at the guest’s feet and seems to ignore the preparation that her sister is doing.

The real ‘put down’ happens when Martha asks for help and Jesus says, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part,…” NO FAIR is our usual response. The reality is that most of us are worried and distracted by all of life. We find it difficult to find quiet and have peace within us. The true tension here is between Doing and Being.  It is a tension within each and everyone of us. We live in a culture and society which does not value ‘being’ and holds ‘doing’ in high esteem. What you accomplish or produce is your worth. Being still and not trying to solve or fix or accumulate are not regarded as worthwhile.

I believe that the story of Mary and Martha is in fact a complimentary story to the ‘Good Samaritan’ story of last week,  to men go and do; and, to women this week, sit and listen. In a patriarchal society, how amazing that women are front and center. Jesus has a way of rattling and shaking up the status quo. The question, for each of us,  is how do we live in this tension and balance our individual need to ‘be’ and ‘do’.

Join us this Sunday as we discern our individual  need to both ‘do’ and ‘be’.

Featured Scripture

     Luke 10:38-42

As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.”

“A Welcoming, Empowering, Supportive”

Ministry!

Our mission statement calls us to be “a welcoming, empowering and supportive community.” We are currently forming a new ministry at St Pau’s to support that mission.  Volunteers are needed from all three services to donate approximately 90 minutes of their time per month.  That time is split into 3-30 minute segments: 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after the service you attend, once per month, to support the Welcoming Table located in the Narthex and another 30 minutes a month assisting with name badge organization.  If you are able to lend a hand, please contact Mike Funke at 760.-409.0986 or mike.funke@yahoo.com!

Help us live our mission statement!

We Need Volunteers

Report Sexual Misconduct.

As part of our ongoing commitment to creating a safe haven for everyone, please remember that our diocese values the tenet of our baptismal covenant to “respect the dignity of every human being.” Part of the way we live into that is to train people in the prevention of sexual misconduct and to encourage all to report any misconduct. All reported incidents are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly and confidentially. If you believe you have experienced sexual misconduct of any kind, please contact the Rev. Canon Suzann V. Holding immediately: sholding@edsd.org

or 619-481-5452.

Bullies Not Welcome Here

At St. Paul in the Desert we want to welcome all worshipers to a place that is free of violence and bullying.

Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable.

“It Gets Better” is a series of video messages to encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender youth and let them know that they are loved as they are.

“A Blessing for Those Who Are Bullied” was written by the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, a Bishop of the Episcopal Church.

It is not enough to say “NO” to bullies. It is important to stand up for people and to provide resources for those who have been the targets.

Episcopalians Against

Gun Violence

. . . is an ad-hoc group of bishops, clergy and lay people disseminating information about Episcopalians who are working, collectively and individually, to curb gun violence. For further information, click here.
