Are We Ready To Be Transformed?
This is the Last Sunday after the Epiphany and every year we read of Jesus being transformed as he and a few disciples are praying on the mountain. There is the presence of Moses and Elijah, the cloud, and the voice. There is Peter’s attempt to organize the experience. Mostly, there is wonder.
There is the wonder, the overwhelming amazement at the transformation of Jesus, symbolized by the clothes that shine with an unearthly brightness. Jesus is now more than what the disciples have heretofore known. And there is the wondering – what does this mean, this finding Jesus in the presence of powerful, holy ancestors and hearing the commanding voice of God? Peter, James, and John do not understand at that point, that they will be transformed for earthly ministry by the command, “Listen to him.”
I have witnessed some earthly transformations. I think about our daughters, when as young women they were transformed and became mothers. There was a change in voice and attitude, a new way of being. I was struck by their “new” selves.
On the mountain top, Peter, James and John were struck by Jesus’ transformation. We read of Peter trying and failing to make sense of it. The disciples would not understand, but the awe would inform their experience of Jesus and the events following. They would become responsible for their lives in ministry in powerful ways, remembering that vision on the mountain top.
The Good News that Jesus proclaimed worked hand in hand with transformation. Human effort or will could go only so far to achieve the liberation, justice, holiness, and abundant life of God’s Kingdom. To live it fully, we need something more, something we don’t control or can’t explain. We need to be transformed, to have our faith and ministries empowered, to become responsible for a deeper way of being.
Join us in worship, open to the changes that God’s presence calls from us, as Jesus leads us to transform the world.
Fr. Andrew

Mark 9:2-9 Common English Bible (CEB)
Six days later Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and brought them to the top of a very high mountain where they were alone. He was transformed in front of them, and his clothes were amazingly bright, brighter than if they had been bleached white. Elijah and Moses appeared and were talking with Jesus. Peter reacted to all of this by saying to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good that we’re here. Let’s make three shrines—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He said this because he didn’t know how to respond, for the three of them were terrified.
Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice spoke from the cloud, “This is my Son, whom I dearly love. Listen to him!” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Human One had risen from the dead.

Bullying Behavior Not Welcome Here
At St. Paul in the Desert we welcome all worshipers to a place that is free of violence and bullying.
Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable.
“It Gets Better” is a series of video messages to encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender youth and let them know that they are loved as they are.
“A Blessing for Those Who Are Bullied” was written by the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, a Bishop of the Episcopal Church.
It is not enough to say “NO” to bullies. It is important to stand up for people and to provide resources for those who have been the targets.

A WELCOMING, EMPOWERING, SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY
Our mission statement calls us to be “a welcoming, empowering and supportive community.” We are currently forming a new ministry at St Paul’s to support that mission. Volunteers are needed from all three services to donate approximately 90 minutes of their time per month. That time is split into 3-30 minute segments: 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after the service you attend, once per month, to support the Welcoming Table located in the Narthex and another 30 minutes a month assisting with name badge organization. If you are able to lend a hand, please contact Mike Funke at 760.-409.0986 or mike.funke@yahoo.com!
Help us live our mission statement!
