The Abundant Life

Rev. November 6, 2015                       For Sunday, November 8th

From The Rector

Holy Land Pilgrimage Begins

This Friday at 11 am, 11 members or friends of St. Paul’s will join a group of 35 for a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land – the land of the Bible and Jesus. We ask for your prayers as we journey, so that we might be open to the Spirit of God.

We will be seeing Holy Places, worshiping along the way, and with local Christian communities on two Sundays, walking some desert paths, and listening. I am focused on the listening and being open to the unexpected places where I will be aware of God’s presence. This will be a Sabbath time for me and for the others.

In the last few months I have been following other Pilgrimages under the same leadership. I met with our Guide at the General Convention in Salt Lake City. We have a parishioner who recently returned from a Pilgrimage under the same leadership. Everyone is attentive to safety. I am confident that we will be safe in regards to the dangers that dominate news coverage.

I am also confident that being on Pilgrimage is not spiritually “safe.” The most dangerous places in the Scriptures are the places where people consciously enter God’s presence. This can happen anywhere, I hope that this Pilgrimage is a way to practice our conscious contact with God so that we keep practicing it when we return.

If you want to follow our Pilgrimage, there is a FaceBook Page: 2015 Holy Land Pilgrimage St. Martins. The itinerary is available below.

Join in worship this Saturday at 4pm where Canon Victoria and Fr. Armand Kreft will lead our PRIDE weekend worship. Know that our conscious welcoming is part of our congregational pilgrimage here at St. Paul’s, as is our conscious journey to enter God’s presence. Neither journey is “safe.”

Featured Scripture

     Mark 12:38-44

Teaching in the temple, Jesus said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows’ houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation.”

He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

Becoming a St. Paul’s Member

Many worshipers wonder how to become a member of St. Paul’s.  If you’re one of them, join Fr. Andrew in the Parish Library on Sunday, November 29th at 9:15 am. In this single-session class, you will hear interesting facts about St. Paul’s, plus, learn all you need to know about becoming a member of the Parish.  (Note:  this is not the same as the Inquirers’ Class.)  If you are already a member, this class is not for you.

At the Church of

St. Paul in the Desert

. . . we welcome all worshipers to a place free of violence, bullying, and abuse. Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable because of our understanding of what it means to follow Jesus.  Please let Jesus’ command to love your neighbor as yourself be your guide.

A WELCOMING, EMPOWERING, SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY

Our mission statement calls us to be “a welcoming, empowering and supportive community.” We are currently forming a new ministry at St Paul’s to support that mission.  Volunteers are needed from all three services to donate approximately 90 minutes of their time per month.  That time is split into 3-30 minute segments: 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after the service you attend, once per month, to support the Welcoming Table located in the Narthex and another 30 minutes a month assisting with name badge organization.  If you are able to lend a hand, please contact Mike Funke at 760.-409.0986 or mike.funke@yahoo.com!

Help us live our mission statement!

Bullying Behavior Not Welcome Here

At St. Paul in the Desert we welcome all worshipers to a place that is free of violence and bullying.

Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable.

“It Gets Better” is a series of video messages to encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender youth and let them know that they are loved as they are.

“A Blessing for Those Who Are Bullied” was written by the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, a Bishop of the Episcopal Church.

It is not enough to say “NO” to bullies. It is important to stand up for people and to provide resources for those who have been the targets.

TAIZÉ MEDITIATION

SERVICE

Our Taize style meditation service is returning for 3 Tuesdays in Advent. Our next Taize service will be held on Tuesday, December 1st  at 7:00 PM.  In a setting of icons, candles and low light, and, using short songs repeated again and again with a few words to express a basic reality of faith, this service of prayer and meditation becomes a way of listening to God. All are invited. To learn more, contact Nathan Ensign at:  760.320.7488, Ext. 225.  We are also looking for a few volunteers to assist in setting up for the service.

VESTRY NOMINATIONS

We will soon be preparing the ballot for the next vestry elections.  Please give thoughtful consideration to who you would like to see serving in this capacity and submit their names (even your own!) for consideration by the vestry nominating committee.

There’s no need to ask individuals if they are willing to serve.  The committee will do that.   Submit names soon to any vestry member.
