Teaching With Authority
Jesus and the first disciples, Simon, Andrew, James, and John, come to Capernaum where Jesus begins teaching in the synagogue. The people notice a difference – he was teaching with authority. However, the text doesn’t define “authority.” Perhaps Jesus taught with an authenticity that made the scriptures come alive for the people?
However, Jesus’ authoritative teaching was interrupted by a scream. A man with an evil spirit begins to testify about who this teacher – Jesus – is. He explains the source of Jesus’ authority – Jesus is the holy one from God. The good people in the synagogue, including the disciples, don’t know who Jesus really is, but the evil spirit does. And he is getting ahead of Jesus’ story.
Jesus silences the spirit and orders him to leave the man. The people who witnessed it saw it as another example of Jesus’ authority. “He even commands unclean spirits and they obey him!” From this experience, the story of Jesus begins to spread.
But, I wonder about the man.
In stories, a character may function just to move the story along. But in synagogues or congregations there are real people who may have spirits that oppress them. They may have illnesses or attitudes that set them apart or mark them as different. There may be people who are just hurt or feeling lost. On some days, that might describe any of us. So I wonder about the man.
I wonder how long he had been part of that gathering. Was he known to the others or was he transient like Jesus? After the spirit left him, did anyone offer him a kind word, a drink of water – a hand?
We know who Jesus is, and of his authenticity and authority. Are we amazed? Is ours the extended hand?
Join us.
Fr. Andrew

Featured Scripture

Mark 1:21-28 (CEB)
Jesus and his followers went into Capernaum. Immediately on the Sabbath Jesus entered the synagogue and started teaching. The people were amazed by his teaching, for he was teaching them with authority, not like the legal experts. Suddenly, there in the synagogue, a person with an evil spirit screamed, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are the holy one from God.”
“Silence!” Jesus said, speaking harshly to the demon. “Come out of him!” The unclean spirit shook him and screamed, then it came out.
Everyone was shaken and questioned among themselves, “What’s this? A new teaching with authority! He even commands unclean spirits and they obey him!” Right away the news about him spread throughout the entire region of Galilee.

Bullying Behavior
Not Welcome Here
At St. Paul in the Desert we welcome all worshipers to a place that is free of violence and bullying.
Physical, verbal or emotional violence against others or against oneself is not acceptable because of our understanding of what it means to follow Jesus. Please let Jesus’ command to love your neighbor as yourself be your guide.
“It Gets Better” is a series of video messages to encourage Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender youth and let them know that they are loved as they are.
“A Blessing for Those Who Are Bullied” was written by the Rt. Rev. Steven Charleston, a Bishop of the Episcopal Church.
It is not enough to say “NO” to bullies. It is important to stand up for people and to provide resources for those who have been the targets.
