For Sunday May 5, 2024

This Sunday: Robert Vivar, Guest Preacher
Robert Vivar will be our guest preacher this coming Sunday. Robert (or “Berto”) is the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego’s Migration Missioner. Troy Elder previously served in this role. In addition to preaching the sermon, Robert will be meeting with the Latino Ministry in the library in-between the services from 9AM-10AM. All are invited to attend and hear more about the important work the diocese is doing at the border. All loose plate offerings from this Sunday will go to supporting the Migration Ministry fund, which directly impacts the diocesan work at the border.
Migration Ministry Fund
The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego (EDSD) is committed to providing support and assistance to those on the margins, including migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees. Through a variety of programs and initiatives, EDSD works to ensure that these vulnerable populations have access to resources and services that can help them rebuild their lives and thrive in their new communities. EDSD wants to help with legal assistance, housing, food, clothing, and other necessities.
The Diocese partners with local organizations that help provide education and job training, food and housing, and spiritual care to migrants – helping people integrate into society and become self-sufficient. They also purchase food items to make 200 sack lunches every Monday for migrants that have been cleared through asylum and are waiting for flights at the San Diego Airport to meet sponsors in other parts of the country. Through these efforts, we’re dedicated to welcoming and supporting those in need, living out the values of compassion and love that are at the heart of our faith.

Spiritual Formation Feedback Questionnaire
At St. Paul’s, we are blessed with an abundance of retired/active priests, ministers, and educators who offer wonderful classes and retreats throughout the year! We are planning for our education/spiritual formation programing for the 2024-2025 year. Your answers to this questionnaire will help us find out what parishioners want and need. It should only take a few minutes of your time. Thank you for completing it!
Circle Supper—End of Season 2024!
End of Season Circle Supper Final Gathering! Everyone who is currently participating in a Circle Supper (whether you went every month or only a time or two) is invited to attend the “End of Season Joint Circle Supper” at Billy Reed’s Restaurant, Palm Springs, Thursday, May 30, at 6:00 PM. Please RSVP to Nancy Antonius at nancyjantonius@gmail.com by noon, Sunday, May 26. Reservations are a MUST. We will need to give the restaurant an exact headcount prior to the event.
Like to sing and want to do so a few times before “summer break”?
We plan on having the choir sing on Pentecost (May 19) and on the Bishop’s Visit (June 2). Rehearsals will continue as usual, Thursdays 5:45 PM and Sundays after the 10:30 postlude, through the first week in June. If you know of congregation members or friends of St. Paul who live full time in Palm Springs and might be interested in singing with us, please invite them. Any questions? Please reach out to musicdirector@stpaulsps.org

Parish Book Club
St. Paul’s Book Club will meet again on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at 2:00 PM via Zoom. Meeting access details will follow. The transition back to Zoom is a bit sooner than anticipated because many folks are returning early. For May, Book Club has selected James by Percival Everett. “From Percival Everett-a recipient of the NBCC Lifetime Achievement Award and finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Booker Prize, and numerous PEN awards-comes James, a retelling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, both harrowing and ferociously funny, told from the enslaved Jim’s point of view.
When Jim,“James” overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. Brimming with the electrifying humor and lacerating observations that have made Everett a “cult literary icon” (Oprah Daily), and one of the most decorated writers of our lifetime, James is destined to be a major publishing event and a cornerstone of twenty-first century American literature.”

Free Movie Screening
Interfaith Refugee & Immigration Services, the refugee resettlement organization that Troy Elder leads, is sponsoring a free screening of a documentary in Palm Springs on May 15. The purpose is to meet new friends as IRIS expands its services into the desert. The movie, “Welcome to Chechnya,” is a critically acclaimed documentary that goes inside the Russian Republic’s deadly war on LGBTQ+ people. Something that continues to this day. And yet, the courage of the activists is amazing. As Entertainment Weekly put it: “It’s shocking, and it should be. But Welcome to Chechnya finds tender, funny moments too — and even, in the end, some kind of hope.” These are the victims IRIS is trying to “welcome home” to the US as refugees. We partnered with IRIS during Epiphany/Los Tres Reyes when we collected items for a refugee family. If you are interested in finding out more about how to engage with this issue, please attend! Click here to reserve your seat.
